Navidades en Home of Lovely Ideas

Once again, we celebrated Christmas in the Lovely Home Ideas' style: decoration in every corner, loads of candles, floral and colors combined matching the decoration of the house ... to enjoy a warm and cozy Christmas.

As always, we like our guests to leave with a favor, and this time we chose to give cookies with a Christmas tree shape. The seating is a classic in our tables, and therefore we decided to put Christmas balls stuffed with porexpan as support.

Other details in the house, like the Advent wreath on the door, or floral arrangements and candles on low and support tables in the living room.

Previously on HoLI, we have given you some tips for planning the perfect dinner: all necessary previous preparations (click to view), including types and amounts of food and drink (click to view) that you must buy in order not to fall short or to have leftovers for a week ...

When you have done all the preparations and the day of the dinner comes, it's time to set the table and seat the guests.

THE TABLE
  1. First, place a fleece on the table and then a tablecloth (should hang 40 cm per side).
  2. Fold the napkin into a square, triangular or rectangular shape. Ii is usually placed to the left of the plate, ¡never inside the cup!
  3. Put the charger (optinal) and the plate for the main course. Place the bread plate to the left.
  4. Put the flatware in the order in which they are going to be used, leaving more away from the plate the first use. Always place the forks with the tip pointing up and left; the knife with the blade inward and righ;, and spoons next to the knives. If there are special utensils (tongs snails, oyster forks, etc.) you also place them to the right.
  5. For the dessert flatware there are two options: you either place them from the start in front of the plate (spoon-fork-knife) with the handles as they are going to be held; or you serve them at the end of the main course and in the same order as the standard flatware.
  6. For glassware, puts the glass or cup of water to the left, the red wine glass in the middle and the white wine glass on right.
SEATING
  1. There are two ways to seat the guests:
    • English: it places the chairmanship at the edges and are used when the number of guests is  peer.
    • French: it places the chairmanship in the center and, if the number of guests is odd, the edges are left free.
  2. To the right of the host you may seat the most senior person of the opposite sex or age; to the left, the second largest and so on. If the guests are odd, the majority sex will determine the chairmanship.
  3. Avoid seating two women together or leaving them in the corners, nor sit together couples.
  4. When serving, follows the order of importance (if it is someone very important or much older he may sit on the chairmanship).

Organiza la Cena Perfecta I

¿Cómo me organizo?

Alternativas:
  • Buffet: suelen presentar unos 8 aperitivos (4 fríos y 4 calientes).

You have decided yo organize a dinner for friends and not know where to start. How do I organize myself? That's the key question which we will respond in a series of posts.
During the upcoming weeks we will guide you through all the steps you must follow to avoid panic at the last minute. Here's the first.

PREPARATIONS
  1. Guests: make a list and note their similarities and their ages (if children, prepare a space for them).
  2. Theme: it will guide the entire organization, helping to define the decoration of the table and the type of food and drink. It is the basic element to make your event unique and personal.
  3. What will I need? Can not miss any food or drink besides a decorative element related to the chosen topic. Rental of household or extra service will depend on the number of guests.
  4. Space: each diner occupies 60 cm on the table. If you don’t think you have enough space on the table, opt for a cocktail dinner.
  5. Notification: if it is a dinner between friends you can simply call or send an e-mail. If something more formal, you should send an invitation fifteen days in advance. If you have many people to invite, send a "save the date" a month and a half before the event, and send later the invitation.
  6. Invitation: you must specify the reason for the dinner, date, time, place and dress code, and include a telephone to confirm attendance. Currently it is common to send invitations by e-mail, but to us it seems much more personal to send them by mail.
  7. Food: includs 2 or 3 warm and 2 cold appetizers. Serve a light started and then a main course. Do not repeat foods (fish-fish) and refrain from exotic flavors (unless that's the theme of the evening). Do not forget dessert!
  8. Favors: you can end the evening with a free gift for each guest. To choose it, build on the chosen theme, and add the necessary material to your list of preparations. Be sure to include the date of the dinner.
Alternatives:
  • Buffet: usually serves about 8 appetizers (4 cold and 4 warm). Include 2 main courses (one cold and one warm) with 2 side dishes each and 2 complementary dishes (salad and soup). Finally add 3 desserts (2 of them should be fruit and chocolate). Note that this alternative is a good resource when you have many guests. The food should be served already sliced and dressed, ready to eat.
  • Cocktail: contains 4 warm and 5 cold appetizers per person and traditionally precedes dinner. It is usually taken standing, so ensures that the food can be eaten in one bite. Nowadawys it can also serve dinner; to do so  increase the number of appetizers to serve, in this case, you must include sweets.

As legend has it, once upon a time there was a little town where a king and a princess lived. In the caves surrounding the village hided a dragon that threatened to eat all the inhabitants. To keep the dragon away from the people, the king decided that every day they would make a draw among the villagers to decide who would be sacrificed and eaten by the evil monster.
One day luck chose the princess and while she approached the cave, Sant Jordi came along. The knight thrust his sword into the dragon's heart and killed him at the very moment he was about to eat the princess. From the blood of the dragon was born a red rose that Sant Jordi gave to the princess.

Catalonia celebrates every 23rd of April the day of Sant Jordi. Thousand of roses fill the streets and while the girls expect her rose, boys receive a book from their partner.

It seems like a very good excuse to organize a romantic dinner for two at home. Here are some ideas to decorate with either fresh or paper roses and books.

Combine with fresh roses with spike and the traditional catalan flag, as we photographed at the amazing florist Envit Singular. The rustic style will give your night a romantic and different feeling.
Would you rather buy roses that last forever? These ones combine patterned papers, plain and others that imitate the tulle fabricto create absolute vintage roses. We've found them at Tinta Gris, a store that we love for its good taste and originality in all their offers.

Another idea is to use books for decoration. Try it!
